Wednesday, April 2nd, Jake’s TED Talks will focus on design. Our first talk is a light-hearted, fun presentation from Chip Kidd. It’s called “Designing Books is No Laughing Matter. OK, It Is.” Chip Kidd doesn’t judge books by their covers, he creates covers that embody the book — and he does it with a wicked sense of humor. In one of the funniest talks from TED2012, he shows the art and deep thought of his cover designs. (From The Design Studio session at TED2012, guest-curated by Chee Pearlman and David Rockwell.) Second, we will watch Eames Demetrios, grandson of Ray and Charles Eames, talk about the work of his grandparents and their lasting impact on the design world as a whole. The legendary design team Charles and Ray Eames made films, houses and classic midcentury modern furniture. Eames Demetrios, their grandson, shows rarely seen films and archival footage in a lively, loving tribute to their creative process. Prior to both of these talks, we’ll wet your appetite with a short, satirical speech from comedian John Hodgman revolving around design. You’ll remember him from the old apple commercials. He “explains” the design of three iconic modern objects. (From The Design Studio session at TED2012, guest-curated by Chee Pearlman and David Rockwell.)
Just a friendly reminder that this is limited to the first 25 people who sign up. We meet every Wednesday from 11:45 am to 1:15 pm in the church lower level conference room. If you have a friend or a prospective member…bring them along!
~TED (Technology, Education and Design) is a global community, welcoming people from every discipline and culture who seek a deeper understanding of the world. We believe passionately in the power of ideas to change attitudes, lives and, ultimately, the world. At Jake’s Cafe, we use these speeches as a source of inspiration and aspiration as well as a platform for discussion among our members.
